De Villiers new Springbok coach

Published on Jan 10th, 2008, 12 Comments

Peter de Villiers has been appointed as the new head coach for the Springboks following up on Jake White‘s success. His appointment was confirmed at a press conference late yesterday afternoon after the president’s council met for two-and-a-half hours to vote on the new coach. De Villiers won the vote by 10-9 over Heyneke Meyer.

De Villiers has been the SA U-21 coach from 2004-2006, and he won the U-21 tournament in 2005 and lost in the final in 2006. He also coached the up-and-coming Springboks in 2007 when the won the Nations Cup in Romania.

De Villiers has been handed a two year contract to coach the World Champions.

  • Prospective All Blacks supporter

In an interview (widely publicised) in June 2007 with Mark Keohane, the newly appointed Springbok rugby coach Peter de Villiers had the following to say:

“De Villiers said he would meet a requirement of 10 black African and coloured players in a Bok starting XV, and added rugby supporters would have to accept transformation was bigger than Test results.

“There will be pain (in results) but it is something we must go through to transform the team. It would be an honour for me to coach the Boks.”

De Villiers said Luke Watson was a natural choice as new Bok captain.

“Victor Matfield would be an option because he is respected all over for his ability as a player, but Luke was my captain with the under-21s. He would be the first name on to my team sheet. He is an inspirational and dynamic leader and a great player.”

Nope this oke is politics first… rugby second!

It almost encourages me to become, like Trevor Manuel, an All Blacks supporter.

If that happens i for one will not support SA Rugby, we will be laughed at all over the world! I hope that De Villiers uses his head and forgets about politics and keep building on the superb work done by Jake White

I don’t agree with you two. I don’t agree with those who, living in New Zealand, disagree with the way that NZRU has re-appointed Graham Henry and swear they will root for the Wallabies, either.

I think that, whoever decides who’s playing (and whatever his reasons for doing so may be), there will be 15 south africans trying to give their everything for South Africa and these are the men you ought to support.

    Best regards,

I cannot see anything wrong with the guy. SA will continue to impress in world rugby purely because of the abundance of top quality south african professionals out there at the moment.
