The French soccer team lost 0 – 2 to the World Cup Champions Italy last night in the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament. France had to win the match in Group C to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Italy ended second after the Netherlands in Group C and will face Spain (the winner of Group D) on Sunday in the quarters. A ‘second team’ Netherlands beat Romania 2 – 0 in Berne to end their Euro 2008 campaign. The French nightmare already started in the 7th minute when Franck Ribery to all indications broke his leg. In the 25th minute things got worse when the defender Eric Abidal got sent off when he fouled the striker Luca Toni from behind. A penalty kick followed and Italy went 1 – 0 ahead. In the 62nd minute Danielle de Rossi took the game away from the French by making the score 2 – 0 from a free kick, deflecting it in the process off the French captain Theiry Henry.

Italy also had to endure some bad news. Pirlo and Gennaro Gatusso both received yellow cards which means they will miss the quarterfinal games.

Scores:

ITALY 2 – 0 FRANCE

NETHERLANDS 2 – 0 ROMANIA
