Are the Gunners back at their best?

Published on Oct 31st, 2011, No Comments

Arsenal player Theo Walcott believes that the team, who had been written off due to their recent string of losses, have proved that they are back at their best with their 5-3 victory against Chelsea.

The departure of star players Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri triggered the team’s worst start to a season in 58 years. Since their humiliating 8-2 loss against Manchester United back in August it seems Arsenal have made a surprising comeback and are now just three points off the top four after their Chelsea victory.

After the departure of Nasri and Fabregas Arsene Wenger was accused of panic buys when he brought in Mikel Arteta, Andre Santos, Per Mertesacker and Park Chu-Young before the transfer window had closed. However, Walcott believes that the new arrivals have begun to settle in, helping the team to climb up the table.

Walcott recently stated that ”We are not looking too far ahead. We don’t want to say where we’re going to finish at the end of the season, but the way we’re playing at this moment in time we believe we can beat anyone.”

Despite losing three of their first five matches of the Barclays Premier League resulting in the worst start to a season in the club’s history since 1953, Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger will not be fired. The statement came from Arsenal’s Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis since Wenger has come under fire by both disappointed fans and critics. Gazidis stated at the Sport Industry Breakfast Club in London in support of Wenger that he “is not a broken man. He did not suddenly become a bad manager or somebody who became out of touch with the game. It is complete nonsense. Firing him is not a road we are going to go down.”

Wenger, who has managed Arsenal since 1996 has not won a Trophy for the club since the 2005 FA Cup.

In the previous three of five opening matches of the Barclays Premier League, Arsenal lost 2-8 to Manchester United in an embarrassing performance, 0-2 to Liverpool and 3-4 to Blackburn Rovers.
