FC Barcelona has consolidated its online leadership in China through the country’s principal Internet service provider Tencent. The Spanish Club and Chinese company are working together to develop Barca’s brand in the Chinese market which will result in the reaching of a massive audience and therefore increase revenue. Director of New Technology Dídac Lee was “very satisfied” with the agreement which will include Tencent developing a Chinese version of Barcelona’s website as well as the commercialisation of applications and mobile games. All the content created by Tencent will be subject the club’s approval.

The agreement also opens up Chinese social media sites to FC Barcelona. Tencent owns several social media sites that boast millions of users including QQ, the country’s largest instant messaging platform with 900 million users; Qzone, with 500 million users and Pengyou with 130 million users. In the mean time, FC Barcelona will open a verified account on Tencent Weibo, known as the Chinese Twitter, this week.

This agreement with China further cements the club’s position as the leader in new technology. Barça leads the way on social networking sites with nearly 23 million fans on Facebook and 4.5 million followers on Twitter (accounts in Catalan, Spanish and English). On YouTube, FC Barcelona boasts the largest sports channel in Spain.

In addition to Tencent, FC Barcelona has deals with several other technology firms including Telefónica I + D to improve the digital experience at the Camp Nou, Google+ and UNICEF.

Redknapp, 64, who is tipped as becoming the next England coach missed Tottenham’s matches against Rubin Kazan at the Uefa Europa League and Fulham after undergoing heart surgery. Redknapp has since told Sky Sports that ”I feel fine, I’ve got more energy than I had before.”

The former Bournemouth, Portsmouth and West Ham manager said he felt even worse watching Tottenham’s 3-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage from his home than if he had been at the ground.

Silvestre Varela and Maicon were also on target for Porto who are aiming for a league, cup and Europa League treble.

Benfica, attempting to reach their first European semi-final for 17 years, thrashed PSV Eindhoven 4-1 with all their goals coming from Argentines, two from Eduardo Salvio and one apiece from Pablo Aimar and Javier Saviola.

Two goals from Brazil striker Nilmar helped Villarreal to a 5-1 win over Dutch league leaders Twente Enschede on a dismal evening for the Netherlands.

Liverpool and Manchester City both failed to overturn first-leg deficits as they were dumped out of the Europa League on Thursday night.

Liverpool were trailing Braga 1-0 from the first leg of their last-16 tie and, although Andy Carroll started his first game for the club, the Reds struggled to produce clear-cut chances and were held to a 0-0 draw.

Liverpool, who have qualified for Europe every year since 1999, will have to finish fifth or above in the Premier League if they are to be involved next season.

Mario Balotelli was sent off as Manchester City failed to overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit against Dynamo Kiev, with a 1-0 win on the night not enough to prevent them crashing out of the Europa League.

Balotelli was issued a straight red card for a crashing 36th-minute challenge on Goran Popov, but City gave themselves hope three minutes later when Aleksandar Kolarov hit a low free-kick under Oleksandr Shovkovskiy.

The Ukrainians defended deep in the second half and restricted City to few chances, threatening to make the game safe themselves when Denis Garmash had a header cleared off the line but holding on for their last eight place.

Rangers – having secured a 0-0 draw in the Netherlands in the first leg – were defeated 1-0at home by PSV Eindhoven. Jeremain Lens scored in the 13th minute and it proved enough to send the Eredivisie side through as the hosts struggled to provide a response.

Santi Cazorla and Giuseppe Rossi teamed up brilliantly to help Villarreal ease into the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at El Madrigal.

Holding a slender lead following their 3-2 win in Germany last week, the Spanish side made sure of their progression thanks to Cazorla’s first-half goal and Rossi’s strike after the break against a spirited Leverkusen side who clawed one back through Gonzalo Rodriguez’s late own goal.

Porto’s pursuit of the treble continued as they progressed with a 2-1 home win over CSKA Moscow.

Having taken a one-goal lead back to Portugal with an impressive win a week ago, Andres Villas Boas’ men got off to the perfect start when Hulk gave them a first-minute lead. Things improved 23 minutes later when Fredy Guarin put them 3-0 up overall and, despite Zoran Tosic pulling one back for Moscow, Porto’s pursuit of the league, cup and European trophies remains intact.

Spartak Moscow hammered Ajax 3-0 at the Luzhniki Stadium to wrap up a 4-0 aggregate win with a free-kick from Brazilian Alex adding to first-half strikes from Dmitri Kombarov and Welliton.

Spartak, who had suffered an embarrassing 4-0 loss at Rostov in their Russian League opener on Monday night, dominated although Christian Eriksson hit the bar for Ajax and was also denied by Spartak goalkeeper Andriy Dikan.

Reigning Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg staged an heroic comeback bid at home toFC Twente, but their 2-0 win on the night was not enough and they slid to a 3-2 aggregate defeat.

Roman Shirokov and Alexander Kerzhakov gave Zenit hope with first-half strikes but Twente defended well and ought to have put the game out of Zenit’s reach when Oguchi Onyewu missed a fine chance late on.

Benfica nudged through 3-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw with Paris St Germain in the French capital. Nicolas Gaitan opened the scoring for Benfica on 27 and Mathieu Bodmer’s 35th-minute equaliser was not enough.

Lech Poznan scored two late goals – one freakish and the other superb – to stun Manchester City 3-1 in the Europa League on Thursday while Juventus drew 0-0 with Salzburg for their fourth draw in as many group games.

CSKA Moscow and BATE Borisov became the first teams to guarantee a place in the knockout rounds, the Russians beating Palermo 3-1 to maintain their 100 percent record while the Belarus outfit beat Sheriff Tiraspol by the same score.

Lech reclaimed top spot in Group A on goals scored after beating City with both teams on seven points from four games.

Dimitrije Injac fired the Poles ahead on the half hour with a swerving shot from outside the area after the Premier League team’s defence failed to properly clear the ball.

Emmanuel Adebayor headed the visitors level seven minutes after halftime but Lech went back in front with four minutes left when City defender Dedryck Boyata’s headed clearance hit Manuel Arboleda on the head and went into the net.

Four minutes later Lech’s 19-year-old substitute Mateusz Mozdzen added to City’s misery with a superb curling shot into the top corner from almost 25 metres.

Juventus, who host City in their next game, have four points after failing to break down the Austrian champions at home.

Group F leaders CSKA Moscow scored three times in seven minutes after halftime to sink Palermo, with Japan midfielder Keisuke Honda wiping out Massimo Maccarone’s 10th minute effort for the visitors before Tomas Necid added two more.

Sparta Prague went second with seven points after coming from behind to beat Swiss second division outfit Lausanne Sport 3-1 away.

Aleksandr Pavlov and Renan Bressan scored in the last 20 minutes for BATE, giving an unhappy European debut to Sheriff’s 19-year-old goalkeeper Dmitri Stajila who replaced injured Vladislav Stoyanov just before the hour.

Group E leaders BATE have 10 points, three ahead of Dynamo Kiev who are favourites to follow them through to the knockout stages after beating AZ Alkmaar 2-0 with a second-half brace from Artem Milevsky.

Atletico Madrid’s Tiago scored a stunning winner six minutes from time to give the holders a 2-1 win at Rosenborg in Group B, with the midfielder leaving three players in his wake before a long-range strike gave goalkeeper Daniel Orlund no chance.

Sergio Aguero had put Atletico ahead after four minutes before Rosenborg, newly-crowned Norwegian champions, equalised through Markus Henriksen after halftime.

Atletico have seven points in Group B, one behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen who beat Aris Salonika 1-0 with a last-minute goal by Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal.

Roy Hodgson’s side came close to conceding on numerous occasions, with Jan Wuytens seeing a first-half effort chalked off for a foul and Dries Mertens drawing a sharp save from Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina in the 39th minute.

Liverpool were lucky to escape early in the second period when Raul Meireles had to head off the line from skipper Michael Silberbauer after Reina came for the ball at a corner and missed.

Fernando Torres produced another subdued performance and was denied by home keeper Michel Vorm after being teed up by Utrecht old boy Dirk Kuyt.

Jacob Mulenga spurned a late sight of goal for the hosts, poking across goal and fractionally wide after exploiting hesitancy from Reds left-back Martin Kelly.

In the group’s other game, Napoli hit back from conceding three goals in the first 16 minutes at Steaua Bucharest to snatch a 3-3 draw, with Uruguayan Edinson Cavani notching the equaliser in the eighth minute of added time.

The results mean Liverpool top Group K and have a two-point lead over Napoli and Utrecht.

Napoli’s fellow Serie A representatives Sampdoria won 1-0 at home to Hungarian side Debrecen in Group I, thanks to an 18th-minute penalty by Giampaolo Pazzini.

Sampdoria share the lead in the group with PSV Eindhoven, who won 2-0 at Ukraine’s Metalist Kharkiv.

Gregorio Manzano’s first game in charge of Sevilla saw his new charges win 1-0 at in-form Borussia Dortmund in Group J.

A goal in first-half injury-time from on-loan Napoli midfielder Luca Cigarini was the difference between the teams, while Marcel Schmelzer was dismissed for the German side after being shown a second yellow card for diving.

Paris Saint-Germain top the group after a 2-0 win at home to Karpaty Lviv gave them six points from a possible six.

Later on Thursday, big-spending Manchester City will look to enhance their credentials as a new power in the European game when they host Juventus in Group A, while defending champions Atletico Madrid tackle Bayer Leverkusen.

The midfielder had the honour of firing home the club’s fastest ever goal in European competition on 27 seconds before Ngog (penalty) and substitute Lucas Leiva put them back in the driving seat after Cristian Tanase had levelled with a sublime first-half finish.

Ngog then put the icing on the cake with a well taken fourth in injury-time to take his tally to six for the season so far.

It means Liverpool have opened their Group K account with an important victory and also sees Hodgson become the first Reds manager in history to win his first five European games.

Going into the clash the boss had opted to make eight changes to his line-up with both Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard amongst a host of players rested for Sunday’s league contest at Manchester United.

It provided Ngog with the chance to once again lead the line after a vibrant start to the new season, while it also offered the Kop its first competitive glimpse of former Porto star Raul Meireles and left-back Paul Konchesky.

A winning start is always important when it comes to group competitions on the European stage and the Reds got off to a flyer when they struck after just 27 seconds.

A careless mistake by Octavian Abrudan presented Cole with a clear run on goal and the former Chelsea man opened his account in his fifth outing for the club with a delightful right foot finish past Ciprian Tatarusanu.

The strike sparked a chorus of famous anthems that helped inspire an added crispness to Liverpool’s early passing game and Jay Spearing went close soon after when he collected the ball 30 yards from goal and lashed an effort just over the top.

However, the early buzz soon faded and on 13 minutes the visitors put together a slick move that saw Bogdan Stancu release Tanase, who beat the offside trap before clipping a majestic finish beyond Pepe Reina and into the Kop end net.

It was the first time Liverpool had ever conceded a goal to Romanian opposition in L4 and there were concerns that tally would double just four minutes later when Stancu’s teasing cross from the right found Pantelis Kapetanos, but the forward was flagged offside, despite being denied by a stunning point-blank stop from Reina.

The troubled English club Aston Villa’s woes continued as they were dumped out of the Europa League with Scottish hopes also suffering a triple wipeout.

Villa, who saw Martin O’Neill quit as coach on the eve of the Premier League kick-off and James Milner sold to Manchester City, were beaten 3-2 by Rapid Vienna in their play-off second leg.

That gave the Austrians a 4-3 aggregate win to follow up their victory over the Midlanders in last season’s tournament.

Villa twice led on Thursday and also missed a penalty as they joined the Scottish trio of Celtic, Dundee United and Motherwell in being forced to write off their European hopes for another season.

Liverpool and Manchester City were left as Britain’s only representatives in Friday’s draw for the group stages of Europe’s second tier tournament.

Roy Hodgson’s Liverpool overcame a disastrous start to score twice in the last seven minutes to defeat Trabzonspor 2-1 for a 3-1 aggregate victory while City saw off Timisoara of Romania 2-0 at home for a 3-0 triumph. At Villa Park, Gabriel Agbonlahor gave Villa an early lead but Vienna hit back through Atdhe Nuhiu.

Emile Heskey then restored Villa’s lead with 13 minutes remaining after Stiliyan Petrov had missed a penalty.

But Mario Sonnleitner headed Vienna level a minute later before substitute Rene Gartler put the visitors through in the 81st minute.

Playing without Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, Liverpool saw their 1-0 first leg advantage last just four minutes in Turkey when Colombian international Teofilo Gutierrez put the home side in front.

He had been set up by Gustavo Colman who had pounced when Dirk Kuyt had given the ball away.

But Hodgson’s side regained the initiative in the 83rd minute when Trabzonspor’s Giray Kacar diverted a Glen Johnson cross into his own net.

Kuyt then added the second on the night for Liverpool in the 88th minute after goalkeeper Onur Kivrak could only parry Joe Cole’s shot into the Dutchman’s path.

“A lot of people have said a lot of things about my future, but for me it is at Liverpool. I like it here at the club and I want to stay here and win things,” said Kuyt.

Shaun Wright-Phillips scored his first goal of the season to help Manchester City overcome Timisoara at Eastlands.

The England winger produced a calm finish in the 43rd minute to open the scoring for Roberto Mancini’s side as the brave resistance of the Romanian minnows was eventually broken.

Dedryck Boyata made it 2-0 in the second half with a close range header to score the first goal of his professional career.

Celtic, who had already been knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers, surrendered a 2-0 first leg lead to go down 4-0 in Utrecht in Holland.

Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored a hat-trick for the Dutch side with Barry Maguire adding a fourth as Celtic’s dismal away record in Europe continued, with just one win in 28 games on the road.

Motherwell lost 1-0 at nine-man Odense, who won the first leg 2-1, at Fir Park last week. Peter Utaka claimed the only goal in the 28th minute.

Dundee United drew 1-1 against AEK Athens but went out 2-1 on aggregate in a match where the venue had to be moved several times.

Elsewhere, Juventus made sure of their place in the next round when Alessandro Del Pierro netted a 53rd-minute winner against Sturm Graz of Austria for a 3-1 aggregate victory.

On a night featuring 35 ties littered with some of the biggest names in European club football and many obscure ones trying to make a name for themselves, Liverpool gained a narrow advantage to take to Turkey next week when the winners on aggregate will move into 48-team group phase.

Italian giants Juventus, who like Liverpool find themselves chasing silverware in the continent’s secondary competition after failing to qualify for the Champions League, sneaked a 2-1 victory in Austria against Sturm Graz.

Porto, CSKA Moscow, Bayer Leverkusen, Paris St Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Celtic all scored comfortable first leg victories while big-spending Manchester City got their European season up and running with a 1-0 away victory against Romanian side FC Timisoara — Mario Balotelli scoring on his debut after signing last week from Inter Milan.

One of the night’s surprises saw Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, winners of the trophy in its previous incarnation as the UEFA Cup in 1978, lost 1-0 in Russia against Sibir Novosibirsk.

Cole, who was sent off during his Liverpool debut against Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday after moving on a free transfer from Chelsea, had his second-half penalty saved by Trabzonspor keeper Onur Kivrak.

That would have given Liverpool, England’s most successful team in European club football, some breathing space but they had to settle for the solitary goal scored by Ryan Babel.

GOOD VALUE

“I think particularly in the second half we were good value for our victory and I think if you miss a penalty you only have yourselves to blame,” Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson, who led Fulham to the Europa League final last season, told ITV.

Liverpool’s other new signing, Christian Poulsen, had a goal ruled out in an eventful second half.

Former Liverpool striker Milan Baros scored twice to earn Turkish club Galatasaray a 2-2 draw with Ukraine’s Karpaty Lviv.

Twice European champions Juventus had a stoppage time goal by Amauri to thank for their victory over Sturm Graz after Leonardo Bonucci’s first-half header had been cancelled out late on by Gordon Schindenfeld.

Italy’s other representaives Napoli and Palermo both won their first legs against Elfsborg Boras and Maribor respectively.

Porto enjoyed an impressive 3-0 away win at Belgium side Racing Genk while CSKA Moscow made the second leg of their tie a formality after thrashing Anorthosis Famagusta of Cyprus 4-0.

Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen also look safe after a 3-0 home win Ukraine’s Tavria Simferopol while domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund beat Qarabag of Azerbaijan 4-0.

Paris St Germain beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-0.

Rapid Vienna drew 1-1 with Premier League side Aston Villa in a repeat of last season’s playoff round tie won by the Austrians.

Spain enjoyed a good night with Villarreal leading the way by beating Dnepr Mogilev of Belarus 5-0. Getafe ground out a 1-0 win against APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus.

They are bidding to join Atletico Madrid in the group phase. Atletico automatically qualified for the groups as champions.

The 10 teams that lose in the Champions League playoffs will also drop into the Europa League group stage.

A welter of high-profile clubs from across the continent will compete in the first-leg matches of the tournament’s play-off round, all gunning for one of 37 slots in the group phase alongside defending champions Atletico Madrid.

Roy Hodgson was on the losing side in last year’s final after leading Fulham to a surprise appearance in the decider, but the experienced English coach has since jumped ship to Liverpool.

His new employers continue their assault on this season’s competition against Trabzonspor, and Hodgson said he will select holding midfielder Javier Mascherano to face the Turkish side despite his desire to leave the club.

“Of course I would play him on Thursday,” said Hodgson, whose side drew 1-1 at home to Arsenal in their Premier League opener on Sunday.

“He is a Liverpool player and I hope he will continue to be a Liverpool player. For me, he will always be available for selection until the day comes when he’s no longer here.”

Liverpool and fellow giants Juventus had to come through the Europa League third qualifying round after both sides finished seventh in their respective domestic leagues last term.

Juve saw off Irish side Shamrock Rovers to reach the play-off round and now face a meeting with Austrians Sturm Graz.

“The draw turned out to be a tricky one for us,” said Juventus coach Luigi Delneri, who took over from Alberto Zaccheroni earlier in the summer.

“We can’t underestimate the task; I will field the best possible XI. I don’t know how far we can go, but we don’t want to set ourselves a limit.”

Attention on City is likely to be intense, after they took their summer spending beyond £100 million by completing the protracted signing of striker Mario Balotelli from Inter Milan last week.

Balotelli could make his debut against Romanians FC Timisoara at the City of Manchester Stadium on Thursday.

Competition for places in Roberto Mancini’s starting XI will now be stronger than ever, but goalkeeper Shay Given believes their strength in depth will give them an edge in the Europa League.

“We have a strong squad, so I’d imagine we’re probably one of the favourites, but we’ve got to go out on the pitch and prove that,” the Irishman told the Uefa website.

“The Europa League (means) there’s a lot of games and the squad will be needed for those games, but we’ve got a strong chance of doing very well.”

Michael Ballack could make his second competitive debut for Bayer Leverkusen when they host Tavriya Simferopol of the Ukraine, having rejoined his former club after leaving Chelsea at the end of last season.

Leverkusen’s compatriots Borussia Dortmund tackle Azerbaijani side Qarabag and Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp is delighted to be returning to continental competition after a season in the European wilderness.

“Maybe a club like Bayern Munich would not be too thrilled to take part in the Europa League but for us this is pure happiness,” said Klopp, whose side finished fifth in the Bundesliga in 2009/10.

Other notable sides in action on Thursday include Napoli, Porto, Villarreal, Paris Saint-Germain, CSKA Moscow and PSV Eindhoven, with the second legs taking place on August 24 and 26.
