The charismatic and five time Major winner Severiano Ballesteros (54) passed away on Saturday.

For two decades, from the mid-1970s to the 1990s, “Seve” was one of the sport’s most celebrated personalities.

He collected 87 career titles and was a crucial ingredient in Europe’s rediscovered love affair with the Ryder Cup, before retiring in 2007 with back problems.

Snedeker denies Donald no. 1 spot in golf

Published on Apr 25th, 2011, No Comments

When Luke Donald lost to Brandt Snedeker in the play-offs at The Heritage in South Carolina, his chance at the top spot in World golf landed in the trap as well.

Needing a victory to top the rankings Donald looked to have achieved his goal when he drained a 12 foot birdie putt at the first extra hole, the 18th.

But Snedeker, who had raced through the field on Sunday with a final round 64, followed him in from similar range to stay alive.

Donald made a great up and down from sand as the pair traded pars at the 17th, the second extra hole, but the Englishman couldn’t repeat the feat when they returned to the 18th again.

SA’s Charl Schwartzel wins the 2011 Masters

Published on Apr 11th, 2011, No Comments

South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel played an excellent final round on Sunday to win the 75th Masters golf title.

The 26-year-old fired a closing 66, including birdies on the last four holes, to reach 14 under and beat Australian duo Jason Day (68) and Adam Scott (67) by two shots at Augusta.

American Tiger Woods (67), England’s Luke Donald (69), and another Australian Geoff Ogilvy (67) tied for fourth at 10 under with Argentina’s 2009 champion Angel Cabrera (71) nine under.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, 21, who led for three rounds, collapsed on the back nine and carded a round of 80 to end four under.

Schwartzel becomes the third South African to win the Masters on the 50th anniversary of Gary Player’s breakthrough win for a non-American at Augusta. Player also won in 1974 and 1978, while Trevor Immelman triumphed in 2008.

Bradley wins Puerto Rico Open

Published on Mar 14th, 2011, No Comments

Michael Bradley won his second Puerto Rico Open in three years at the Trump International Golf club by beating fellow American Troy Matteson at the first play-off hole.

Matteson had started the final round with a three-shot lead, but he struggled with his game and could only post a level-par 72 on a final day when the more consistent veteran, Bradley, was able to post his fourth consecutive 68 for a 16-under 272 total and force the event into a play-off at the Trump International Golf Club.

In the play-off, 44-year-old was able to hold his nerve better and make the solid par that mattered on the first extra hole and lift his fourth PGA Tour title when Matteson inexplicably missed a 3-footer.

“I had almost the same putt in regulation, a little shorter and it went dead straight. And that one just barely broke enough to catch a piece of the hole,” a bemused Matteson said afterwards.

“If I hit it a little easier, it might have barely fallen in the left side. But I hit a good putt. I hit it right where I was looking and that’s all you can do.”

Ironically Bradley only ended up in the playoff because he had earlier missed a 3-footer of his own on the same hole when he played it in regulation.
