Manchester United have won their record 19th English Premier League title on Saturday courtesy of a Wayne Rooney penalty 17 minutes from time.
Requiring only a point to lift their 12th championship of Sir Alex Ferguson’s incredible reign, United had fallen behind in the first half when Brett Emerton’s far-post drive gave Blackburn a shock lead.
With Tomasz Kuszczak’s nerves affecting his team-mates, for a while, United looked to be heading for a nerve-jangling final-day ending with Blackpool.
But help was at hand in the form of Rovers keeper Paul Robinson, who needlessly slid out on Javier Hernandez.
Blackburn Rovers now hopes that the planned sale of the club to Indian conglomerate Venkys will be completed in November, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.
Venkys’ chief Anuradha J Desai added: “We expect to be the first Indian company to acquire a Premier League team and we are particularly delighted that the team is Blackburn Rovers, with whom we believe we have many shared values and ambitions.”
“A series of meetings, including discussions with the Premier League, have followed an extensive due diligence process. Both parties are hopeful that the transaction will be completed in November,” Rovers’ chairman John Williams said in a statement on the club’s website (www.rovers.co.uk).
The V.H Group, of which Venkateshwara Hatcheries P Ltd is the flagship company, specialises in poultry farming and claims to be the “largest fully integrated poultry group in Asia”.
Fernando Torres scored the winning goal as Liverpool beat Blackburn Rovers 2 – 1 at Anfield on sunday.
The 26-year-old’s winner was his first goal since the win over West Brom on August 29.
It came at the end of a crazy five minutes in which Sotirios Kyrgiakos had given the Reds a lead only to see it cancelled out by a Jamie Carragher own goal.
Roy Hodgson made seven changes from the side that earned a creditable draw in Napoli on Thursday, with rested stars such as Steven Gerrard, Raul Meireles and Torres back on the teamsheet.
They helped Liverpool make a lively start, with the hosts almost earning a lead with eight minutes on the clock when Torres split open Blackburn’s defence with an angled ball to Maxi Rodriguez. (more…)
Blackburn Rovers came from behind on Monday night to beat Arsenal 2-1 in their English Premier League encounter at Ewood Park, leaving the quest for third place wide open.
David Dunn cancelled out Robin van Persie’s opener before Christopher Samba scored the winner to stun the visitors.
A win for Arsenal would have confirmed third place in the Premiership and direct qualification for the Champions League group stage.
But bitter north London rivals Tottenham can now move to two points behind them if they win at Manchester City on Wednesday, meaning Spurs could pinch third place should they win and Arsenal lose in Sunday’s final round of matches.

In scoring his 1st goals for the club, Andrei Arshavin helped Arsenal break a four game streak without a goal and send them into fourth place in the Premier League and back into Champions League contention.
With nearly four games without a win and a season riddled with injury, it seemed unlikely the Gunners would qualify for a spot in the Champions League. Fabregas, Rosicky, Eduardo, Walcott, and Nasri (to name a few) have or are still suffering from injuries. Lets not forget about the selling of Hleb, Senderos and Henry. For the first time in a while Wenger has had few big name options to turn to and those still at the club have been having poor seasons by any standard.
Never being one to buy his way out of trouble Wenger used what he had at his disposal and him and the side slogged it out until the January transfer period. There had been talk of the star from the Euro Cup Andrei Arshavin making a move from Zenith but for a figure (20 mill) that Arsenal were simply not willing to pay. In the end his move made signing history for the club and is currently their largest purchase ever.
I myself thought, who is this guy, where has he been, he is no spring chicken, why now? I thought it may just prove to be like the Djouf signing for Liverpool.
Arshavin has slotted in well and is already accustomed to the Arsenal brand of football, something Wenger always manges to find, but was the 12 mill worth it? Is he going to continue on to become an Arsenal great? I hope so! Will he be a Thiery Henry? Unlikely.
