Lampard keeps Chelsea title hopes alive

Published on Mar 8th, 2011, No Comments

Frank Lampard scored twice and captain John Terry first to inspire Chelsea to a 1 – 3 win over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on Monday night to keep the Blues’ title hopes afloat.

Skipper Terry, 30, opened the scoring with a first-half header before vice-captain Lampard, 32, ended relegation-threatened Blackpool’s resistance with two goals in the second period, one a penalty.

Jason Puncheon, who hit the post for the home team in the first half, pulled a goal back with four minutes to go when he drilled a low left-footed shot into the corner of the net.

Chelsea are fourth in the table with 51 points from 28 matches. They have a game in hand on leaders Manchester United (60 points) and visit the Old Trafford side later in the season.

“I don’t think we were at our best today. At times we were a bit sloppy but luckily with a bit of quality up front we won it,” Lampard told Sky Sports.

Gerrard and Lampard pairing?

Published on May 25th, 2010, No Comments

lampard-gerrardFabio Capello has hinted at pairing Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the central midfield for England at the World Cup.

They might be two of the national team’s best players but getting the best out of both of them at the same time proved beyond Sven-Goran Eriksson and Steve McClaren.

It was only when Capello began to use Gerrard in a more attacking role wide on the left that a solution was finally found.

However, with Gareth Barry’s presence in South Africa dependent on recovery from an ankle injury he will have a scan on later today, Capello could not have failed to be impressed by the control Gerrard brought to a patchy England performance when he was switched back into the centre during half-time of a 3-1 win over Mexico.

Lampard not interested in treble talk

Published on Apr 20th, 2009, No Comments

frank_lampard.jpgEngland international midfielder Frank Lampard insists Chelsea would be happy with just one trophy this season even though they remain on course for a treble.

Guus Hiddink’s side reached the FA Cup final with a 2-1 win over Arsenal in Saturday’s semi-final.

That Wembley triumph came just four days after the Blues edged into the Champions League semi-finals, where they face Barcelona, with a dramatic 7-5 aggregate victory against Liverpool.

Chelsea, who trail leaders Manchester United by four points, also remain in the hunt for the Premier League title.

But Lampard is uncomfortable with all the talk of winning three trophies because it puts unwanted pressure on the squad.

“I hate talk of the treble,” he said. “When you talk about it the pressure gets even more so we must keep our heads down and take each game and competition as it comes and if we do that then we will have a chance.

“It will be very difficult to win three but if we can win something then that would be great.

“We are now in a position where we can potentially be very successful this year.

“We have got spirit at the moment, are playing well and confident. Once we got back level there was a feeling throughout the team that we would go on and win it.
